A coyote - the former top dogs of Yellowstone - running up the hillside.
The last photo is in the Lamar Valley. The coyotes were not only awaiting their opportunity to feed at the elk carcass, there were 2 males and a female engaging in a bit of courtship. When a male would approach, she would avert her tail to allow the male a good sniff. This male was skulking off - at least temporarily.

Strangely enough, this is also part of Paris Hilton's mating ritual.
Sounds like you had a fantastic trip! You got some great photos as well.
this pictures are worth the wait (I'm at my parents on dail up that's connected at 32k). I've never seen a wolf in the wild, I've heard them, but not seen them. I once saw a coyote in Yellowstone--at a pull off area--he had been in a tangle with a porpipine and had quills in his mouth and looked so sad. Glad you had such a great trip and that you saw wolves along with foxes and coyotes.
If only human courtship were as easy.
These are some nice, healthy-looking coyotes. I grew up in Agoura/Calabasas, and the coyotes didn't look nearly this good. They were pretty scrawny, in fact. I hated hearing their call at night, though, because it usually meant they were making a kill. It always creeped me out.
edit - word!
mishy - ha!
sage - I saw a photo of a bear with the same plight . . . he looked miserable too
edit - agreed!
la - these coyotes were definitely bigger and fluffier and healthier looking than our local beasties
Great photos!
