As I was driving to work today, I passed a bus that said I could get help planning a bus route at the Orange County Transit Authority website. This gave me the perfect opportunity to exorcise some of my OCD demons and try to find a reasonable way to take the bus to and from work. I have to say, the options weren't too bad. Yes, it would be a longer commute, but I could spend the time knitting, reading or working . . .

True, it's been decades since I've taken the bus, but I'm going to give it a try . . . Southern California is seriously lacking in public transportation options, but I'd like to take my car off the road at least one day a week . . .

I take the bus everyday. Going into downtown is fine. Coming home is a nightmare. Everyone is crammed, hot and tired. I just read the tiny Zen book that lives in my purse. It helps.

Carts and those wheeled chair/buggy things (that seniors use), are taking over the buses. They take up a lot of room. With our aging population its only going to get worse.

I foresee a time when we'll all be sitting on top of the bus like they do in India.

When I lived in Buffalo and worked downtown, I took the train/subway. It took a little longer but it was cheaper, dropped me right off in front of my work building and it gave me time to read. Buffalo has a really good public transportation system...it's too bad more cities don't have it.

The good thing about taking the bus is you will run into lots of wackjobs who will inspire you to post great blogs.

You could also spend the time talking to crazy people on the bus.

Good for you! I have the same problem, there is NO decent public transportation in Denver. They attempted a lightrail, but it doesn't get near my neighborhood, nor my office, so I'm SOL. (Working from home a day or two a week, though, helps.)

Yes, good for you indeed. I have considered taking the bus, but in my job there is the possibility that I have to leave my office and go to one of our many reatil locations. I would also have to take two bus systems (OCTA & MTA) and transfer to two bus lines. I know, I'm making excuses instead of finding solutions.

Toronto's public transportation isn't too bad, but because I live outside the suburbs and work even farther in the sticks, I'm forced to drive everyday.

Good for you for considering public transit!

Well, back when I lived in LA I had to ride the bus for about 6 months after my car died and I had to save up money for a new one. I remember the bus being full of babbling insane homeless, Mexican ladies with ten kids, very, very old people loaded down with grocery bags, and for some reason, nattily dressed Armenians. Of course, this was in the Burbank/Hollywood area. Things are probably different by the beach.
